Fraser Health News: September – Back to School Health

Your healthy back-to-school guide

As summer winds down, it’s time to gear up for a healthy back-to-school season. Set the stage for a

smooth transition back to school. Here are some practical tips to get you started.

Prioritize sleep

Ensuring your child gets enough sleep is an important part of a healthy back-to-school routine. Quality

sleep helps with concentration, mood and overall well-being. In the weeks leading up to the start of

school, gradually adjust your child’s sleep schedule so they can adapt to the new routine. Aim for nine to eleven hours of quality sleep per night.

Eat well

Support your child’s learning and development with scheduled meals and snacks. Breakfast kick starts

their morning, while snacks and lunches nourish them throughout the day. Pack a water bottle to help

them stay hydrated.

Boost immunity

As with any public environment, school exposes children to various germs. Ensuring they are up-to-date on their vaccinations helps protect them and others. Specific immunizations are recommended for children prior to entering kindergarten as well as in grades six and nine. Help your child avoid the spread of illness by encouraging them to wash their hands regularly, teaching them to cover their coughs and sneezes and keeping them home when sick.

Keep active

Adding physical activity to your child’s routine sets them up for success. Activities like walking or biking to school, playing sports, dancing, swimming or helping around the house are great ways for your child to stay active. Set limits on screen time and promote outdoor play as much as possible for overall well-

being.

Make time for talking and connection

Going back to school can be a cause of anxiety or stress for children. Make it a point to encourage open communication and support your child to talk about their feelings and help them feel heard and

understood. Integrate downtime into their routine where they can relax or focus on a special interest or

hobby.

Curriculum Evening September 19

The goal of the curriculum evening is that parents leave with a deeper sense of what will be going on in their child’s classroom this year.  We will be hosting one evening for both campuses.  All parents will meet for an opening message from the administration at the Elementary Campus chapel.  Following this, parents will be invited to attend the sessions that are of interest to them.

Classroom teachers will be in their rooms hosting two sessions, back to back.  Specialty teachers will be available in their designated spaces to answer any questions parents may have regarding the Music, French, PE or EAL program.

Parents with students in multiple grades will be able to attend one session and then travel to the next session, even if it is located at a different campus.

The evening will start at 6:00 pm at the Elementary Campus chapel.

The evening will conclude at 7:30 pm.

Volunteer Opportunities – 2023/2024 School Year

1. Do you like to Run? Swim? Bike?  Do you want to get involved in providing an amazing opportunity to get our kids moving and participate in a unique sport and community event? Then this is the volunteer opportunity for you!

Hope is looking for 5-6 AMAZING parent volunteers to organize/guide/support Hope’s students at this year’s Spirit Triathlon that will be held Sunday, June 9, 2024 at Hyde Creek Recreation Center in Port Coquitlam. The parent volunteers would be involved in the coordination of relay teams and managing the Hope Triathlon team on the big day. Volunteers are equipped with the step by step checklist, guide and Spirit Triathlon mentor to walk through the steps from promotion to race day.

It is open to students in grades 2-5. Students can join a relay team or compete individually. This event is for students of all abilities – you don’t need to be an athlete to complete a triathlon!

Learn more https://www.tribc.org/news/hyde-creek-spirit-triathlon-recap/

**If you are interested in this fantastic opportunity, please send an email to by March 8 to let us know that you want to volunteer and support Hope’s kids in participating in the Spirit Triathlon Sunday, June 9, 2024!**

2. We have a volunteer opportunity for the KM Club: We are looking for one detail-oriented parent to help us with data entry for the duration of the Spring KM Club. The volunteer would need to be present at each last run of the week (typically Friday, but it might be Wednesday in case of pro-d days), wait until the end of the counting to take home the folders, transfer the week’s runs to a spreadsheet and return the folders on Monday before the run starts. Interested parents would also need access to a computer with internet connectivity and be familiar with either Excel or Google Sheets. This usually takes no more than 1h of time per week but is a perfect combination with counting at the end of Friday’s run (another volunteer opportunity). Interested volunteers can reach out to Maik at 604.315.8446 or .

Pi even appears in the spiral of the DNA double helix! This is why we care about pi, and it’s why we’re inviting you to come celebrate this exceptional number with us at our Pi Day party! We will have Pi related games and fun activities for everyone. Let’s celebrate this incredible, irrational number!

Kindness Challenge

Our Kindness Challenge continues until February 16th.

The smallest act of kindness can change someone’s entire day!  It can come from anyone at any time.  And, it’s the little things that can mean so much.  Kindness is a gift that everyone can afford.

Families, what you can do to show kindness and Be the Light to our greater community.  If you plan for a service project, please let me know so I can share with our Hope Community and highlight it in the newsletter.

Each day during our challenge, everyone is encouraged to intentionally perform an act of kindness. It could be something as simple as holding the door open for the next person or taking time to thank someone who offered assistance.

For those MS students attending LEST, kindness doesn’t stop at the border.  Parents, your children can be intentional about recognising and thanking the hotel staff, food servers, and drivers, etc. wherever they go.

Inspire others – let us know what you’re doing to be the light and spread kindness!  Share your inspiring stories and ideas for kindness: .  Your story could be in the March edition of The Hope Herald.

New Bible Reading Plan

A new Lenten Bible reading plan is starting this Wednesday in our women’s small group.  Interested in being part of a small group of parents reading short excerpts from the Bible?  Both women’s and men’s groups are running within our parent community.  Email Lisa today to be a part of this discipleship community ().

2024-25 Re-enrolment Period for Current Families

Re-enrolment for our current school families for the 2024-2025 school year is now open and will CLOSE this Friday, FEBRUARY 9.  An email was sent out January 26 with the 2024-25 Re-enrolment forms.  Please review all the forms closely.

This is an important time for the school community as this sets the framework for what classes will look like for the 2024-25 school year.  We thank you for the attention and promptness you will put in your response during this re-enrolment period.

Technical Issues Affecting Email

Please note that January 30 & January 31 the school experienced an e-mail system outage.  As such, some emails that were sent to and from the school may not have gone through on those days.

As we are in the 2024-25 Re-enrolment period, we are aware that this may have affected re-enrolment forms sent using the electronic submission option during this time frame.

If you sent an email on Tuesday or Wednesday, January 30 or 31, but have not heard back, we encourage you to follow up to see if your message was received.

Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

Candy-grams Fundraiser

Candygrams will be distributed on February 12th or 13th as many of our Middle School students are leaving for LEST on February 14th.

Thank you for supporting the gr. 5 students as they prepare for their gr. 5 celebration at the end of the school year.

All funds raised will go to helping our school library buy new books. We are inviting all students in all grades to check if they have unused books in good condition at home and to consider donating them to this initiative. If you have any books at home that you don’t want anymore, please send them to the gr. 3A classroom (room 209) by February 21st. Thank you so much, and don’t forget to drop by the gym after school on the 28th to get some new reads!

Kindness Challenge

The smallest act of kindness can change someone’s entire day!  It can come from anyone at any time.  And, it’s the little things that can mean so much.  Kindness is a gift that everyone can afford.

Starting today, until February 16th, we are having our annual 12-day Intentional Acts of Kindness Challenge.

May Day Parade Participation

As a way of promoting our school, we are entering Port Coquitlam’s 101st May Day Parade as a walking group.  We’d like to gauge the interest of our families ahead of the parade date so we can adequately plan.  Please indicate in this Parade Participation Form if your child/family would like to participate in our walking group and represent our school.  Parents and students will be expected to walk the 1.5km parade route and help with handing out promotional packages to families with young children.

Extreme Weather Closures

As we encounter the winter weather season, please note the following important information regarding Hope Lutheran Christian School closures due to extreme/inclement weather

  •  The decision to close (full day or partial day/late start) the School due to extreme weather will be made on the day of the closure, so families can make alternate arrangements.

by 7:00 am,

  • The announcement will be posted as quickly as possible on our Facebook page and our school website. Do not phone the school, as staff will not be available.
  • The decision will be made taking into consideration the safety of our families and staff, and the School’s ability to operate normally, and will be based on the best information available at the time.
  • Any extreme weather closures will automatically apply to both campuses, and Schola Bohemia – Before and After School Care.
  • Hope Lutheran’s extreme weather closures may not be the same as the local School Districts’ closures.
  • Winter weather can change quickly, therefore, when the School remains open, all decisions regarding travel to and from the School are the responsibility of each family.

Port Coquitlam May Days – Royal Party Application

The city of Port Coquitlam is putting out an invite to all Port Coquitlam students in Grades 1, 2, 4 and 5. Represent your City as a May Day Royal Party member!

All positions are selected by a random draw for each school.

The Royal Party is a historical tradition in Port Coquitlam. Royal Party members include Flower Girls and Junior Lancers from Grades 1 and 2, and Princesses and Lancers from Grades 4 and 5. Members of the Royal Party will be randomly selected from interested applicants. Being a Royal Party member provides opportunities for children to develop community leadership skills as the Royal Party presides over the May Days festivities. A May Queen, Ambassador, First Princess, and Record Bearer are selected from the group of Princesses and Lancers.

The Royal Party will learn a couple of simple dances led by a professional dance choreographer. No previous dance experience is necessary. These dances will be performed at the May Days Opening Ceremonies on Sunday, May 5th, 2024. Participants will be required to attend all dance practices at the Port Coquitlam Community Centre twice per week on Wednesdays and Fridays after school, from February until the Opening Ceremony in May.

Please see this LINK for the Royal Party application form. The deadline to apply is January 22nd.
